保存鉄道に乗る

久しぶりにのロンドンである。今回は同行のO氏が無類の鉄道ファン（特にSL）であり、ひょんなことから保存鉄道に乗りに行くことになった。もちろんSLで、俺としては人生初のSL乗車となる。

まず現場に向かう。今回乗る鉄道は「Blue Bell鉄道」というらしく、ロンドンからちょっと離れたところにある。電車とバスを乗り継いで向かうことになる。

ロンドンはVictoriaの駅からEast Grinsteadという駅までの往復切符（9.9ポンド）を購入。いざ列車に乗り込む。ところが、この日はどこかで事故があったらしくなかなか来ない。小1時間駅で待って、ようやく乗った列車も信号の度に一旦停車する、という状態である。結局Victoriaを10時前に出て11時前にはEast Grinsteadに着く予定が、午後1時到着となった。そこから保存鉄道の駅までバスがあるはずであったが、週末しかないとのこと。結局タクシーに乗って、1時55分発のSLに乗ることになった。

さて、駅に到着すると、すでにSLが準備を始めていた。SLと言われて、当初は巨大な機関車を想像していたのだが、予想に反して実際に来たのはかわいいおもちゃのような蒸気機関車であった（冒頭写真）。駅の近くで水などを補給し、いっちょまえに「シュッ、シュッ」と力強い蒸気の音を発しながら機関車が客車に連結された。ちなみに、連結部分は日本のようにカギとカギを合わせたような形ではなく、チェーンでつなぐような感じである。

列車が出発する。のんびりとしたスピード。「ガタン、ガタン」というレールの継ぎ目の音が、最近の無味乾燥な電車では聞かれない、妙に懐かしいのんびりとしたリズムである。非常に心地いい。感動してしまった。

列車は途中一つ駅に止まり、約30分で終着駅へと着いた。ここで帰りの列車まで約30分時間がある。この駅はSLの操車場があったり工場があったりして、ちょっとした展示場のようになっている。ここには巨大なSLがいっぱいあったが、何台ものSLが並んでいる図は非常に壮観である。

ちなみに、この列車、往復8.5ポンドで一応切符がもらえるのだが、この切符がまた良い。今の子供は知らないだろうが、昔の硬券なのである（下写真）。やっぱり切符はこれに限る。

帰りものんびりと30分、かわいい蒸気機関車に揺られた。非電化区間の単線を走るSL。これ以上ない美しい光景である。

というわけで、プチ鉄道マニアの俺様にとっては非常に満足な度であった。O氏に感謝である。ちなみにO氏、大の鉄道ファンで、ご自宅にミニSLを自作されているようである（もうすぐ線路を引くらしい）。
