アンカレジ
昨日のフライトでアンカレジに到着した。到着時、滑走路は一面雪。マーキングなどほとんど見えない状態であった。気温も-9度くらいで極寒。
昨日は到着後一日寝ていて、夜は眠れず。夜中は雑用をし、朝6時過ぎにホテルのカフェテリアでバターミルクパンケーキ（馬鹿でかいパンケーキ）を食べると眠くなってきたので、昼の3時まで就寝。さすがに二日連続で昼間なにもしないのもなんなので、いそいそと街へ歩きに出ている次第である。
しかし、アンカレジという街、何にもない。小さな街である。今ホットスポットのカフェを見つけてやっとこさネット環境にありついた。ホテルはローカルコールが無料であるが、こちらのプロバイダを見つけていないので、使えない。
今日は幾分気温が高いらしく、道路の雪も融けかけている。おそらく明日になるとバリバリに凍るのだろうか。
明日の午前中にフランクフルトに旅立つ。初めてのポーラールート。北極付近の磁気コンパス不正確地域を飛行する。フランクフルトでは2泊するが、ちょうどクリスマス。どの店もしまっているに違いない。ビールとソーセージにありつければいいのだが。

Pandaに荷台
ついにPandaに荷台がついた。結構苦労して、昨日の夜中2時間くらいかけて装着した。なんで、そんなに時間がかかったのか？
というのも、うまく固定できなかったからである。
モノは、Thuleの「Kit23」とルーフレールなし車用のフットと荷台の棒。Kit23というのがPanda専用の固定具となっている。Kit23は爪のようになっており、荷台を屋根の上に載せて、Kit23を窓枠に引っ掛けて荷台を固定する、というしくみ。
ところが、このKit23。おそらく、車の屋根が前傾しているのに形を合わせている（左右非対称になっている）のだが、どうやら、同じ側の部品が二つ入っていたようなのだ。言葉では説明しづらいが、靴にたとえると右足用のものが二つ入っているようなものである。なので、いくら固定しようとしても、締め付けるほどにアンバランスが生じてきて、ぐらぐらと動いてしまうのだ。
Kit23の形に問題がある、ということに気づいた時点で夜中の12時半くらいになっていたのだが、どうにも上手くいかないので、ゴムなどをかませて、何とかある程度固定できたしだいである。ちなみに、問題が生じたのは前後のバーのうち、前の荷台だけで、後ろの荷台はがっちりと固定されている。
まあ、よっぽどのことがない限り荷台がぶっ飛んでいくということはないけど、少しでもぐらつくことで車体に傷がつきそうだし、あまりいい気分ではない。
購入元に問い合わせてみる。といっても、在庫が全店で一つしかなかった、とか言ってたからなぁ。返品は困難か。

ノートパソコンと生殖能力
ノートパソコンを膝の上に乗せて使うと、精子の数が減るそうだ。
ニューヨーク州立大学ストーニー・ブルック校の不妊治療研究チームが最近行なった研究によると、仕事時にいつも膝の上でノートパソコンを使っている男性は、子どもを作る能力に問題が出る可能性があるという。
研究チームでは、ノートパソコンから熱が発生するうえ、膝の上に直接パソコンを載せると、これを支えようと腿を閉じた姿勢になって熱がこもることから問題が生じるとしている。この熱が陰嚢に伝わり、温度が数度上昇して、精巣が機能不全となる危険範囲に達する可能性があるという。（Wired News 2004/12/10）
1度温度が上がると生産数が40%減となるらしい。精子がそれほど熱に敏感だったとは。電磁波云々以前の問題なわけね。サウナや長風呂も避けたほうがいいのだろうか。
